READING POWER: TUTOR FAQ
"Surprisingly, the students are not the only ones to benefit from the work we do. Tutors bond with students across the year while teaching, mentoring, and celebrating their remarkable progress. The gift is in seeing the remarkable progress students make across the year."
How do I sign up?
Click here to tell us about yourself or email readingpowerinc@gmail.com.
What qualities must a tutor possess?
You need to be able to read and write and to have a love of children. You must be prepared to honor your time commitment to the children you will tutor.
Do I need teaching experience?
No. While many of Reading Power's tutors have taught professionally, we also have tutors who are business executives, massage therapists, attorneys, accountants, musicians, social workers, architects, marketing executives, dental hygenists, nurses and bankers.
How much time is involved?
You will donate one morning or one afternoon a week, about three hours.. The times will be 8:30-11:30 or approximately 11:30-2:30. In late August there will be a two-hour organizational meeting. Three or six hours of training will occur the second week in September.
What if I can’t attend the orientation/training sessions but still want to volunteer?
On-site training can be arranged if necessary, but attendance at the opening sessions is extremely important.
Where will I be tutoring?
RP operates in four elementary schools in North Chicago, Illinois:
A.J.Katzenmaier, South, Greenbay, Forrestal and Yaeger Schools. Click for more information
How many other tutors will be at my school?
There are five to eight tutors assigned to each school during each tutoring session.
How will I know what to teach?
There is a set system of teaching, and you will be trained to use it. When you arrive to tutor, a lesson plan prepared by yesterday’s tutor awaits you. You will learn how to fill in a lesson plan for tomorrow’s tutor.
What kinds of activities are included in the lesson plan?
First, second and third graders will read several little books, do some writing and play some brief phonics games during each session. Kindergartners will do some writing, play some brief phonics games and be read to.
What safety measures are taken?
Tutors will undergo a background check. They will wear an identifying Reading Power nametag while at the school and will sign in and out at the school office.
Where do I park?
Parking is available on the street or in the school parking lots and requires no sticker.
What do I wear?
Comfortable clothing and footwear are recommended. Because students wear uniforms and may not wear jeans, tutors usually do not wear jeans either.
What if I can’t commit to being a full-time tutor but still want to help?
Our students deserve to have the finest tutoring we can provide, so we only accept tutors who can commit to coming weekly.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN READING POWER.
