Communications and Marketing Manager

Role Overview:

The Marketing and Communications Manager plays a pivotal role in enhancing Reading Power’s public image and advancing its mission to raise funds and recruit tutors. Collaborating with the Community Engagement and Volunteer Manager and the Programs and Development teams, this role develops and executes comprehensive communication strategies for both internal and external audiences. Responsibilities include creating, editing, and publishing content across print, digital, and video platforms. Additionally, this role may plan and execute outreach events to further support marketing and communications goals.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Propose and implement communication and marketing strategies to achieve organizational goals and objectives. This includes collaboration with cross-functional teams
  • Manage creation, production, and dissemination of all print, digital, and video marketing materials
  • Adhere to all organizational brand usage guidelines, including developing brand guidelines and templates
  • Manage creation and selection of photography for print and electronic communications
  • Develop and manage content to the organization’s current and future social media channels (i.e. Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube and emerging networks)
  • Manage and review content for organization’s public-facing website, update with fresh content on a regular basis
  • Develop and implement a monthly newsletter for internal and external audiences.
  • Actively pitch story ideas about the organization to local media outlets
  • Select message appropriate media. Ensure integration of content across different media
  • Track, measure and report effectiveness of communication programs, marketing campaigns and events
  • Write and prepare speeches and presentations for organizational leaders for various events and engagements
  • Coordinate the evaluation of potential external partnership opportunities.
  • Assist in budget development for organizational marketing and communications efforts and provide projections and recommendations.

      Skills/Qualifications:

      • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, social/digital communications, or a related field preferred
      • 3+ years of marketing and communications experience
      • Experience in creating and implementing strategic communication plans
      • Expertise in digital marketing and social media creation and management
      • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work well with individuals across all organizational levels
      • Excellent oral and written communication skills (writing samples may be requested)
      • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, G-Suite, Meta, Constant Contact, WordPress, and Canva
      • Strong work ethic, excellent time management, integrity, and accountability. Creative self-starter with the ability to multitask effectively
      • Experience in organizing and managing events is preferred
      • Ability to develop and manage budgets related to communications and marketing activities

        The Details:

        This position will report to the Director of Operations. The culture at Reading Power is rooted in respect, trust, and a passionate commitment to our mission. This is a full-time, exempt position in a flexible work environment. Includes paid time off, 14 paid holidays a year, generous PTO, 401K, and individual health insurance options. Annual salary range $50,000-$60,000. Total compensation offer will be commensurate with candidate experience.

        Community Engagement Coordinator

        Role Overview:

        The Community Engagement Coordinator will assist with tutor recruitment, onboarding, and engagement both in-person and via our tutor engagement software. This role requires creativity, strategic thinking, and a passion for our mission. The ideal candidate will bring fresh ideas and perspectives to enhance brand visibility and engagement.

        Responsibilities:

        • Assist the Community Engagement and Volunteer Manager in all tutor recruitment, onboarding, and retention efforts.
        • Recruit volunteers at community events, farmers markets, and volunteer fairs (including occasional weekends and evenings).
        • Post fliers in high-traffic venues to attract volunteers.
        • Maintain and update volunteer opportunities on online networks such as GreatNonprofits.org and VolunteerMatch.
        • Conduct background checks for new tutors, handle waivers and policies, facilitate digital learning, and assist with site and shift assignments.
        • Develop and implement volunteer appreciation strategies, including service hour emails, birthday and anniversary messages, and social media posts.
        • Administer exit surveys to gather feedback from departing tutors.
        • Establish and nurture relationships with faith-based and community organizations to raise awareness of our mission.
        • Demonstrate a commitment to Reading Power’s mission through work and actions.

            Qualifications:

            • Bachelor’s Degree; experience in a non-profit organization is a plus.
            • Proficiency in Google Platforms, Canva, and Asana, with the ability to quickly learn other applications for data management.
            • Outgoing, self-starter with the ability to multi-task effectively.
            • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
            • Strong collaborative skills to work effectively with other organization staff.
            • Physical capability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
            • Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods.
            • Occasionally required to bend, stoop, reach, and kneel.

              The Details:

              • Part-time position with a combination of in-person and remote work.
              • Hourly rate: $23/hour, approximately 20 hours per week.
              • Office location: 900 North Shore Drive, Suite 178, Lake Bluff, IL.
              • Access to office space as needed.
              • Reports to the Community Engagement and Volunteer Manager.

              Director of Development

              The Key Accountabilities:

              The Director of Development is responsible for raising these funds in collaboration with the CEO, the Board of Directors and supporting staff. Revenues are a combination of individual donations, corporate and private foundations, civic organizations and events.

              Fundraising Strategy and Leadership

              • Collaborating with key internal stakeholders, develop and execute an annual fundraising plan to diversify and strengthen the funding base and support
                expansion goals.
              • Prioritize major gift fundraising strategies and tactics.
              • Build a planned giving program with a focus on deferred legacy bequest gifts.
              • Represent Reading Power at public appearances and/or speaking engagements
                to share the organization’s story with the broader community.
              • Prioritize key actions for the CEO, board and other senior leaders to take toward cultivating, soliciting and stewarding donors, and prepare and support them as they execute.

              Grants

              • Oversee and work closely with a grant writer to meet all current foundation funder requirements and pursue grant opportunities.
              • Identify and cultivate new potential foundation partners.
              • Manage foundation calendar, systems and processes for LOIs, grant applications
                and reports.

              Donor Stewardship and Relations

              • Identify and build a pipeline of prospective major donors.
              • Develop and implement individualized donor plans for major donors.
              • Develop and manage a personal portfolio of current and prospective donors.

              Events

              • Successfully execute an annual golf outing in fall 2024 (already established) and a one-time anniversary gala in the spring of 2024.
              • Identify additional opportunities and implement new cultivation events to
                support expansion goals and community stewardship.

              Data and Administration

              • Oversee fundraising data and systems in Salesforce ensuring the organization’s donor and prospect information is always current and accurate.
              • Analyze and leverage data and metrics to measure success and guide development strategies and tactics.
              • Prepare and deliver fundraising reports at board meetings.
              • Manage gift entry and timely donor acknowledgement process.

              Communications and Marketing

              • Write, plan, and execute an annual appeal.
              • Work with the Communications Manager to develop a year-round donor communications strategy.
              • Develop targeted communications to major donors.
              • Unearth compelling Reading Power stories to highlight in donor written materials.
              • Collaborate with Communications Manager to provide donor related content for social media.

              Qualifications:

              • Minimum 5 years of demonstrated successful development experience encompassing individual, foundation and corporate fundraising, and a strong knowledge of fundraising principles and practices.
              • Bachelor’s degree required.
              • Goal-driven, results-oriented, and committed to the organization’s efforts to increase its capacity.
              • Experience leading a team; building relationships.
              • Strong organizational, managerial, and communication skills, with significant attention to detail.
              • Experience writing donor communications such as appeals and grant proposals.
              • Familiarity with budgeting process and financial analysis.
              • Ability to interact with a diverse staff, donor base and volunteer groups.
              • Strong technology skills: Google Suite, Microsoft Office, CRMs
              • Expertise in fundraising software and tools, such as Salesforce NPSP.

              The Compensation and Benefits:

              • This is a full-time, exempt position in a flexible work environment.
              • Includes paid time off, 12 paid holidays a year, generous PTO, 401K, and individual health insurance options.
              • Annual salary range $90,000-$100,000 with bonus potential.
              • Total compensation offer will be commensurate with candidate experience.
